BONITA SPRINGS, Florida (CNN) -- A fireworks display being assembled for a Fourth of July celebration erupted in flames Wednesday, setting off massive explosions that killed four people and injured two others, one critically, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blasts.

"A tragedy of this sort is devastating to a community like Bonita Springs," said Debbi Redfield with Bonita Springs Fire Control. "People who were working to give us a beautiful holiday celebration were killed doing their jobs, and we mourn for their friends and families."

Redfield said authorities received calls of "numerous explosions" going off around 2 p.m. at Lovers Key State Park, where the display was being set up. Bonita Springs is a Gulf Coast community of about 35,000 located between Naples and Fort Myers.

"When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a tractor-trailer fully engulfed in fire," Redfield told CNN. "Another vehicle right beside the tractor-trailer was on fire. Several explosions were still occurring at that time."

One witness said the blast "was just like being in a nuclear explosion."

"Just flames everywhere," he said.

Video from the scene showed the tractor-trailer burned to the ground, with gray smoke rising from its blackened wreckage.

Redfield said the four killed and two injured were employees of Sunset Fireworks, the company setting up the display. One of the injured was in critical condition with severe burns, she said. The other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The state fire marshal's office, as well as bomb squad members and other agencies, went to the scene to investigate, she said.

A Sunset Fireworks official at the company's Missouri headquarters would say only that "company principals were en route" to the scene, and declined further comment.

The park has been closed and the fireworks display canceled. The fireworks display, Redfield said, "seems pretty trivial at this point."
