The senate Judiciary Committee has finally agreed on a Immigration Reform Bill today. This weighs heavily in favour of immigrants. The controversial leagalisation of illegal people and guest worker program passed by voice vote.
This essenially means that Senator Bill Frists proposal will now be replaced by the Senate Judiciary committees version for debate by the senators.
Although it does not have any mention of DV Lottery at this stage the bill may well and will likely change during debate. And just looking at the proposal to reduce Family based application reduction by raising cap on the visas available one could infer that such a major reform with increasing numbers of immigrants thru temporary worker program as well as raising caps on family/employment quota will move many senators to balance out or at least reduce immigrant in some other way - and this may come in the form of eliminatiing the DV Lottery to use 55 000 visas elsewhere.
Its early days yet as bill when passed by senate will need to be reconciled by HR. One thing is getting more and more sure - DV 2007 wont be eliminated.
