Grizzly Bear Kills Man In Yellowstone National Park; First Fatal Mauling Since 1986
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- Yellowstone National Park officials say a grizzly bear has killed a hiker in the park's backcountry – the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1986.
Park spokesman Al Nash says it appears the man and his wife surprised a female grizzly and her cubs Wednesday morning
Nash says investigators have been interviewing the woman about the bear attack, which took place close to Canyon Village, near the middle of the park. He says authorities aren't prepared to release the man's name, age or hometown and likely won't release more details until Thursday.
Nash says park officials haven't taken any action

A grizzly bear killed a 57-year-old man hiking in Yellowstone National Park with his wife Wednesday. It's the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1986, the AP reports.
Remote campgrounds and trails near the scene of the attack, close to Canyon village in the middle of Yellowstone National Park, have been closed following the tragic incident.
The mauling comes a week after Yellowstone's peak tourism weekend.

Ik zou ook niet zomaar in het park gaan rondlopen op paden ver van de geasfalteerde weg. Is dat zo? De NPS was dat niet van plan begrijp ik: The initial investigation suggests the sow grizzly acted in a purely defensive nature to protect her cubs. This female bear is not tagged or collared, and does not apparently have a history of aggression or human interaction. Typically, the National Park Service does not trap, relocate, or kill a bear under those circumstances. A Board of Review which will include interagency experts will be convened to review the incident.

Goed om te lezen Marianne. Meestal wordt daar niet eens over nagedacht en wordt zo'n dier gelijk afgeknald. Ik ben blij dat ze dat hier niet van plan zijn!

Inderdaad, gelukkig maar. Dat was namelijk ook het eerste wat ik dacht toen ik het hoorde...
Ik zei ook gelijk, eigen schuld van die man... (of ben ik nu wel erg hard?)

Ik ben zelf ook meerdere keren (zwarte) beren tegengekomen, aan de kant van de weg, maar ook een paar uur wandelen van de 'bewoonde' wereld.
Geen enkele keer een probleem gehad . De moeder beer liep zelfs van haar kleintje vandaan, en niet in onze richting dus de vertrouwde onze aanwezigheid.
Als je afstand houdt en de dieren respecteerd, dan respecteren ze jou ook is mijn gedachte.
