[Lonely Planet USA]
One of the top bargains in town, this Little Italy gem brings European flair to the West Coast, complete with black marble lobby and well-equipped rooms.

[Lonely Planet Coastal California]
This is the best budget deal in San Diego. All the rooms are newly renovated and clean with plenty of natural light. In the heart of Little Italy, it's within walking distance of the harbor.

Popular Gaslamp Quarter hostel that counts a big kitchen among its assets.

[Lonely Planet Coastal California]
This facility in the Gaslamp Quarter has lots of space for hanging out, an elevator and wheelchair-accessible rooms and bathrooms. It's a good deal but if you leave your windows open at night it can be noisy.

The Friendship Hotel ($29-45/$125-150 per week)
3942 8th Avenue 619-298-9898

[Lonely Planet California]
with basic rooms, is a solid budget option in Hillcrest. It's on a quiet side street within walking distance of restaurants and nightlife.

Hillcrest Inn ($59+)
3754 5th Avenue 619-293-7078

[Lonely Planet Coastal California]
Friendly staff have their finger on the pulse of the gay community (but welcome straight guests, too). Ask for bar recommendations and you may get a free-drink coupon.

[Lonely Planet California]
with a central court-yard, Jacuzzi and friendly staff, is good value. It welcomes straight and gay guests, but no children.

Inn at the YMCA ($55)
500 West Broadway 619-234-5252

[Lonely Planet Coastal California]
This downtown budget option has rooms with shared bathroom, which are quite OK as a money-saving option. Some people stay here longer term, so weekly rates are available.

[Lonely Planet California]
is handy to the Amtrak and Greyhound stations and to the trolley to Tijuana.

J Street Inn ($60/$180 per week)
222 J Street 619-696-6922

[Lonely Planet California]
is a postmodern, rather hip choice near the Gaslamp Quarter. All units have kitchenettes.

Padre Trail Inn ($59-79)
4200 Taylor Street 619-297-3291 800-225-9988

[Lonely Planet California]
is pretty cheap. It has a pool, bar and restaurant, and air-conditioned rooms

Vagabond Inn ($70-89)
4540 Mission Bay Drive 619-274-7888

[Lonely Planet California]
it's not on the water, but it's handy to the I-5

[Lonely Planet California]
also well positioned and well worn. Most rooms have a full kitchen
