Broward Sheriff's Office ordered to pay man nearly $31 million

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -
The Broward Sheriff's Office has been ordered to pay nearly $31 million to a man who suffered massive brain damage after a car crash with a deputy.
A jury deliberated for six hours before announcing Thursday that Eric Brody and his parents, Charles and Sharon Brody, of Sunrise, should get $30,609,298.
The jury said Deputy Christopher Thieman was responsible for crashing his patrol car into a vehicle driven by Brody, now 25, the night of March 3, 1998.
The crash has left Brody's motor functions severely impaired and his family must provide him constant care, said Brody's attorney, Lance Block.
"He will need care and supervision the rest of his life," Block said. "Basic everyday functions - being able to cut your meat, being able to button your pants, being able to take a shower - are very difficult, if not impossible, for Eric."
Thieman was not named in the lawsuit and was not cited for the crash.
Defense attorney Michael Piper, of Fort Lauderdale, said that Brody was partly responsible for the crash because he made an improper left turn and was not wearing his seat belt.
"Those facts seemed to be very significant in this case," Piper said. "The jury, for whatever reason, felt differently about those facts."
Piper said an appeal depends on upcoming motions, including one for a new trial.
