Huge sculptures in the shape of everyday objects thats what Claes Oldenburg is known for. Are they sleek pieces of contemporary art? Subtle social commentary? Visual puns? Philadelphia has two major Oldenburg works, set in the most unlikely places.
Clothespin When office towers rose across from City Hall (Philadelphia) in the 1970s, the Redevelopment Authority required that 1 percent of the funds go to public art. Oldenburg quickly sketched a giant sculpture of the figure 1%. Soon his ideas grew less literal, and the result was his 45-foot steel Clothespin, completed during the 1976 Bicentennial. Some viewers see the soaring metal forms as two people embracing. Others notice that the clip resembles a 76. Still others interpret the sculpture as a reminder of the daily drudgery behind the pomp of politics and corporate affairs.
